It is a common belief that regular cleaning is sufficient for healthy teeth. Unfortunately the good old toothbrush cannot cope with all deposits and discolorations. You may want to take a good look at the inner side of your incisors in the mirror.

Can you see those yellow-brownish deposits between the gum and the teeth? That is tartar.

Do your teeth have brown spots? Do you notice that you teeth are no longer white? These are microbe deposits, which are a combination of food, caffeine, tobacco and hardened saliva. They cannot be removed with your usual toothbrush. Unfortunately these deposits cause gum diseases. This is great environment for bacteria. We recommend that our patients take oral hygiene treatment at least twice a year, which can be part of their regular dental checkup.

Does scaling harm enamel?

Carefully and properly performed scaling is not harmful to enamel.

how often should scaling be done?

The need for scaling is determined by the level of personal oral hygiene and composition of saliva. The more mineral compounds saliva contains the more plaque is formed on teeth. It is recommended to perform scaling every 1 to 3 years.

Use a Fluoride mouthwash, several times a day for the week following the bleaching. Avoid tobacco, coffee, tea and dark colored sodas and staining types of foods. If you must indulge, drink a glass of water immediately afterwards to minimize the staining effects.
